Reader overview

BIS’s Compulsory Registration Scheme (CRS) record links a registered manufacturer and factory to the product category, Indian Standard, brand, model scope, status and validity. The licence is granted to manufacturers for declared units and models; adding a model requires relevant test reports. Overseas buyers should treat an R-number as a starting point: the quotation, full nameplate model, production address and current scope must align, while seller authority and shipment or batch conformity need separate evidence. ZIMONAI’s editorial view is to use the public record as a factory-and-model matching tool, not proof that every seller or shipment is covered.

  • 01

CRS records identify more than a brand: the public search exposes the manufacturer, manufacturing address, product name, Indian Standard, status, validity and licence scope.

  • 02

A model must appear in the applicable licence scope, including any explicitly listed series models; a similar family name or matching wattage is not a substitute.

  • 03

Registration is tied to a manufacturing unit and declared scope. It does not independently establish that a reseller is authorised, that a shipment carries the correct mark or that later production lots remain consistent.

01

First classify the adapter, then read the right CRS record

BIS does not treat every wall plug or USB charger as one interchangeable “adapter” category. Its public CRS standards table separates power adapters for IT equipment from adapters for audio, video and similar apparatus, and lists other product categories and Indian Standards as well. A product’s intended use and applicable notification therefore matter before a registration result can be interpreted. The name “charger,” port count or rated output alone does not establish which category applies.

The BIS search page accepts a registration number, product name, model or brand, and the public table can show the registered manufacturer, address, country, product, Indian Standard, grant date, status, validity, scope and brand. Start with the exact quoted product and the finished-product use; then confirm which CRS category and currently applicable standard the supplier says covers it. Where the standard or notification has changed, verify the operative transition or effective-date notice rather than assuming an older record or a newer standards-table entry settles the date question.

  • Record the adapter’s intended host or use and whether it is sold as a stand-alone supply or with another product
  • Compare the supplier’s stated CRS product name and Indian Standard with the BIS product-category table
  • Check the current notification, standard revision and any effective-date or transition notice relevant to the planned import
02

Match the R-number to the actual factory and the full model

BIS states that the CRS applicant is the manufacturer or factory owner. Its registration scope is based on declarations for the manufacturing unit, brand and models; BIS also asks applicants for government-issued proof that identifies the unit’s name, address and relevant manufacturing activity. The public record is therefore useful for comparing the factory named by the supplier with the site listed under the R-number—not merely for checking whether a brand name appears somewhere in the database.

Open the scope details and compare the model character by character with the adapter nameplate, including letters, digits, suffixes and regional variants. BIS’s public example for an IT-equipment power-adapter registration lists individual models and some lead/series groupings, and shows withdrawn or deleted-model fields. Its scope-change guidance says model inclusion is based on relevant test reports and a manufacturer’s undertaking. A product family, shared casing or same wattage does not itself demonstrate that a new model was added.

  • R-number, licence status and validity on the day the supplier’s evidence is reviewed
  • Registered manufacturer name and complete factory address against the supplier’s declared production site
  • Product category, Indian Standard, brand and exact model or expressly covered series entry
  • Any scope history, model withdrawal, deletion or renewal information visible in the record
03

What the registration does—and does not—settle for procurement

BIS’s CRS process includes testing through a BIS-recognised laboratory before registration. Foreign applicants without a liaison office or branch in India must appoint an Authorised Indian Representative under BIS guidance. These details help buyers understand the registration chain, but the public listing is not a substitute for the actual grant letter, test report, applicable marking instructions or importer’s shipment file when those records are needed for the transaction.

For purchasing, keep three questions separate: is the correct factory and model in the current CRS scope; is the seller or exporter entitled to supply product made under that registration; and does the delivered unit, label and production lot match the approved configuration and applicable mark? A positive database match is useful evidence for the first question, not automatic proof of the other two. ZIMONAI’s practical assessment is to use the R-number as a joining key across the quotation, label, factory identity and supporting documents, then resolve every mismatch before it becomes a shipment exception.

What buyers should match

What buyers should match

  • Search BIS CRS by R-number, product, model and brand; save the live result date and the complete scope detail
  • Confirm the CRS product category and currently applicable Indian Standard against the product’s actual use and official notices
  • Match the registered manufacturing-unit name and address to the factory identified in the quotation and production documents
  • Compare the full nameplate model and brand with the listed scope; do not infer coverage from a series name, rating or similar casing
  • Ask for the grant letter and relevant test report or model-inclusion evidence if the public scope is incomplete or ambiguous
  • Separately reconcile seller/exporter authority, product marking, shipment documentation and production-lot controls
